During the many walks I have taken through Berkeley, I have come to notice many interesting graffiti of Squidward. Squidward is a major character in one of my favorite kid’s shows, “Spongebob Squarepants.” Not only do the graffiti make me smile, but they make me look back fondly on my childhood. I find joy in these small things around our campus, and would like to share them with others in hopes of spreading that joy. For this project, I tried to stick to our class theme of 'Witness and Testimony,' witnessing the Squidwards throughout the city and giving testimony to what I saw and felt. With that in mind, I have written a short narrative depicting a walk across campus, visiting a handful of the Squidwards for reflection. The narrative has an uplifting and light-hearted tone. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Below I have included the comprehensive collection of Squidwards that I have found so far. Most of the Squidwards did not make it into the narrative for various reasons. As well, several have already perished since the time of photography; either weathered away by an uncaring nature, or simply painted over by an equally apathetic government worker.
As you may note, there are only a few facial types, such as the frowning Squidward and the blissful Squidward. Other small variations exist, but those are the predominant archetypes. Given the variation in both style and medium, I speculate that the Squidwards were drawn by a group of friends, enjoying the college experience.
When I first came across the Squidwards, I figured they were several years old, merely a remnant of a past generation. Yet, very recently I’ve discovered that some of the Squidwards came into existence post-December 2016. Extrapolating from this data, the artist (or artists) is likely enrolled at UC Berkeley. The artist is no longer a faceless vandal whose name is forever lost to the world, but one of my fellow students! Now one of the things I think about when I walk through the streets is which of the passersby could be the Squidward vandal.
